I wasn’t alive when “The Spy Who Loved Me”, starring Roger Moore as James Bond (007) came out in 1977, but I remember being 4 years old and watching it for the first time and seeing the amazing Lotus Esprit S1 transform after a high speed helicopter chase into a fully functional submarine. 🏎️

While this is a masterpiece of vehicular design and engineering (can’t go wrong with a reliable, tested and true V-6 from a Toyota Camry), I think this customer will be requiring our delivery services. 😂

THE FAMOUS MR. EDWARD MACNAUGHTON HIMSELF, IN THE FLESH!

There are so many things that I can tell you about this wonderful gentleman… Mr. Edward MacNaughton, or simply “Ed” for short to those of us who know him, who hails from the famous MacNaughton Clan itself, is one of VNTG’s most prized jewels.

This wonderful man came to us as a package deal, it has been a pleasure and over the last year that we have worked together and our whole team at VNTG has learned so, so much from him, from his meticulous, careful and precise mind, from his knowledgeable words of advice, from his wisdom, from his old school humor, and at the same time from his wonderfully constant grumpiness… He wouldn’t be called Grumpa if that wasn’t the case after all! 😅

Not too long ago, his lovely wife Mimi passed away, and since then Ed has been putting more of his time at VNTG, helping us with wonderful projects, complex restorations, guidance in woodworking and even just general life advice.

Ed graduated from the prestigious and world renowned Stanford University, and him and his family have a long story here in Hawaii, with his father and uncle originally being brought here to manage Castle & Cook of Dole Pineapples fame, ultimately settling down in this paradisiacal land and building one of the most prominent Real Estate companies in the state.

Having been retired for many years, Ed took the woodworking trade under his wings, and with the advent of YouTube “University” has learned and amassed an incomprehensible amount of expertise in the carpenter trade.

Despite smoking like a chimney, he impresses us all with his unwavering energy indicating to us all that he could be way younger than he looks.

This week he took upon this awesome project, repurposing this massive 9ft long solid plank of Koa for a wonderful customer of ours into a bespoke desk, going as far as reinforcing the slab with aluminum bars.

We can’t wait to see the finished product!

When I say that VNTG has the best customers, is because VNTG has the best customers! 😍

Not only do they tend to have an impeccable taste in cars, but also in art… so much so that they call in to ask if we can stay open for a little longer (until about 5:30 PM) since they are driving from the other side of the island and rush hour traffic is bad, so of course we say yes!

Customer shows up in a beautiful yellow Honda 2000, but then guess what… it won’t fit, but fear not, since you can always put the top down to make more space. 😅

The client really wanted to secure this piece which greatly resonated with him depicting the sunrise overlooking Diamond Head and comes with a great story. 🌅

JAY JASKOT, Percussion:

Jay lays down RED NOVA’S rarified percussive foundation, invoking liberated, trancelike polyrhythms. Born and raised in Honolulu and active in the New York scene for many years, drummer Jay Jaskot sports remarkable versatility, shifting fluidly between any variety of percussive genres. His artistic influences span a staggering breadth of varied artists, from Tony Williams and Jack Dejohnette to Paul Motian, Alex Cline, John Bonham, Elvin Jones, Brian Blade, and Tony Allen.

RANDY WONG, Bass:

Innovative versatility informs the extraordinary aesthetic mapping of bassist Randy Wong. His resonant punctuation on the acoustic bass forms a pulsing bridge between RED NOVA’s melodic and percussive elements. Randy is a protégé, among others, of legendary bassist Cecil McBee, and pianist Michael Cain, with whom Randy studied at New England Conservatory. Randy has played with Brother Ah (Robert Northern) & George Clinton, Zsaccai Curtis, Michael Dease, The Waitiki 7, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, and others.

PETER SHAINDLIN, Trumpet, digital trumpet, hand percussion:

Peter studied improvisation in New York with bassist Ahmed Abdul Malik and Tommy Turrentine. Today he focuses on pushing the boundaries of free jazz, including pioneering explorations on the digital trumpet. In 2022 he formed the progressive trio RED NOVA, now featured on Forward Records.

Not only did we have tremendous fun, we enjoyed a phenomenal meal and even got to see a very just protest across the street!

We love to celebrate the incredible contributions of the women in our world on this day each year. Here are just a few who inspire us, each in their own way.

Florence Knoll revolutionized office design by emphasizing rational space planning & modern furniture, effectively shaping the “Knoll Look” that continues to influence contemporary design.

Zaha Hadid defied architectural norms with her fluid, dynamic designs, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Coco Chanel liberated women from restrictive clothing, introducing comfortable & practical designs like the little black dress & jersey suits, thus embodying a spirit of independence & modernity.

And at VNTG we see the remarkable influence of a woman in business doing things her way, bringing creativity, steadiness & smarts to help us evolve into our best selves.

No matter how crazy & difficult things may seem these days, we want to keep shining the light on the irreplaceable influence of diverse perspectives.

We always strive to make positive & uplifting posts, from the content, to the carefully chosen text, to the colors & sometimes above all the soundtrack that accompanies it.

This year, as this wonderful date approached, we honestly had a hard time coming up with something along those lines, as just in the past month and a half there have just been a deluge of news, announcements, rules, laws & regulations imposed upon us that defy & seek to change the well established status quo, unfortunately not in what we would call a virtuous way or for the collective betterment of women.

So we chose a song, that perhaps reflects the proverbial “smoke & mirrors” of our current society.

In my upbringing I learned an important lesson… that to tell a good lie, one that will hopefully stick, someone needs to bring it as close as possible to the truth, as to pass it as true, while still being a lie.

That, is the most dangerous lie of all, the one that sneaks up on you unperceived until it is too late.

Don’t let the men in the High Castle tell you otherwise!

The Big ol, the big daddy, the icon, the myth, the legend, perhaps the most recognizable single chair (or piece of furniture for that matter, PERIOD!) ever made, the real, one and only Eames Lounge Chair and matching Ottoman first brought to market in 1956.

This beauty is presented to you by VNTG, in incredible unrestored yet mint condition, in stunning custom Chocolate upholstery in the highly sought after and unavailable since 1991 (and really the one you want / should want), Brazilian Rosewood finish.

This example swivels like butter, cocoons you just like your own mother when you were a child, supports you like a cloud and adds that everlasting touch of “je ne sais quoi” that only Ray and Charles Eames could have fathomed and brought to life.

Authentic Midcentury Modern 6-Panel solid Teak Folding Screen with Square Lattice Design

A stunning and very handsome six panel solid teak folding screen with intricate lattice design, circa 1960’s-1970’s. It also includes beautiful and perfectly functioning brass hinges, which do great in Hawaii as they won’t corrode overtime.

No markings whatsoever but our research seems to indicate that it is American made.

Each individual panel measures 12” ½” wide x 70 ¾” tall making the entire width of the piece 75”. The screen is in very good vintage condition with small breaks noticeable.

This is a fun and creative decorative piece sure to add an elegant element of design to any decor, be it to add texture to a perhaps bland setting or corner of a home, or to nicely create separation between on open living concept!

Here, at this wonderful organization (or so we think… 😅) that we have started slightly over 1 ½ years ago, the vision was to always be more than just furniture! It was to be a gathering place, of creatives, thinkers, scholars, artists, performers, etc… a cosmopolitan Mecca of people who had something to offer, an idea to bloom, a collaboration to germinate, an effort to be made viral, a collective of amazing people, inclusive and welcoming to anyone independently of their age, sex, creed, political affiliation, ethnicity… and for all these people we wanted to help them thrive, to give them a stage and a megaphone.

Über rare vintage Klipsch horn speakers, but not any of them… Instead, their Heritage Collection Belle Speakers, producing up to 106 db of pure, audiophiliac pleasant sound.

Authentic Danish Modern Imola Chair by Henrik Pedersen (Low Back version)

The unmistakable Imola chair is a piece of hand-made Danish design perfect for lounging areas, chic niches or entrance foyers or lobbies.

Imola delivers a true statement, which, depending on its upholstery choice, can demand attention or appear understated.

The Imola chair delivers a comfortable and stylish destination for lounging or a brainstorm for one. The design by Danish designer, Henrik Pedersen, was inspired by the swirling halves of a tennis ball. That inspiration is mostly seen in its side profiles, which appear to be the product of a single slice.   Imola can be finished in any of 120+ fabrics and leathers, but in this case it was optioned with their most expensive authentic Italian white leather.

Its two base options are minimal, placing rightful attention on the seat form. Having two types of based to choose from, consisting of a swivel or wireframe base, this is the latter in brushed steel.

This is also the rarer and rarely seen low-back version, being more versatile and fitting easily in more spaces.

Authentic Midcentury Modern Dramatic Large Scale Walnut and Brass Lamp.

Stunning large lamp, circa 1950’s-1960’s, featuring a gorgeous wooden frame and two diametrically opposed symmetric vertical arms, supporting a central brass rod with a walnut pull chain ball, a cylindrical inner shade supported by two arcing walnut arms.

The two walnut arms raised on a circular base. The on-off switch is a suspended walnut circular ball that floats in the middle of the brass rod.

Handsome architectural form executed in solid walnut, accented with a central brass rod and inner shade with blue and green lucite accent strips creating a beautiful effect when lamp is on. This is very much influenced by the space age era of the 1950s, and is in excellent / near new condition.
 There were so many makers of these stylized table lamps during this period. It is very difficult to pinpoint provenance for who might have made this one.

The most likely is the American maker Stiffel Lighting, Co., of the Period.
