History: In 1930, Architect Philip Johnson asked cutting-edge German talent Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design his New York City apartment. He accepted what was essentially interior decorating job for the opportunity to bring his furniture design to the United States. The project became a Miesian icon, known as "Couch".

The sleek, hand-tufted hide cushion and single cylindrical bolster on an African-mahogany platform with tubular steel legs is extremely versatile - useful in a small apartment, elegant enough for any space, and simple enough to match any decor.

Paul Galloway, MoMA’s collection specialist of architecture and design noted “It’s an extremely simple way of delineating space... It could sit against the wall or by a window. And because it’s low, it didn’t block the space.”

The couches are expensive and difficult to make, and w manufactured in minuscule batches in Berlin until 1964, when Knoll took over production. While the early editions go for serious sums at auction, “even without the cushion,” notes Galloway, “it’s strictly due to rarity. The Knoll ones are actually better made.”
